Genetics play a significant role in the realm of mental health, influencing the likelihood of developing various disorders. While genetics do not dictate mental health outcomes alone, they provide a significant piece of the puzzle alongside environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and nutrition. Here, we explore how genetics intertwine with mental health conditions and discuss how nutrition might influence these conditions.

The Genetic Influence on Mental Health

Schizophrenia: One of the most studied mental disorders in terms of genetics, schizophrenia has a strong heritable component. Research shows that if one identical twin has schizophrenia, the other has about a 47% chance of developing it, underscoring genetic influence. Certain genes like catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) are under scrutiny for their role in regulating dopamine, a neurotransmitter linked to schizophrenia.


Bipolar Disorder: Also known to run in families, bipolar disorder involves episodes of mood swings ranging from depressive lows to manic highs. Genetic studies have linked variations in genes like methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) to this disorder, suggesting a genetic predisposition.


Depression: With a complex genetic architecture, depression can be influenced by a multitude of gene variants. A notable example is the polymorphism in the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTT), which can moderate the influence of stress on depression.


Anxiety Disorders: Genetic factors have been linked to various anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. Research into the genetic overlap between different psychiatric disorders suggests shared genetic risks.


How Nutrition Interacts with Genetic Predispositions

Nutrition can act as a modulator for genetic expression, particularly through epigenetics, where environmental factors like diet can influence gene activity without changing the DNA sequence itself.


  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and have been linked to reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety. Omega-3s may influence the expression of genes related to neurotransmitter function, potentially offering benefits for those genetically predisposed to mood disorders.

  • Vitamins and Minerals: Deficiencies in nutrients like vitamin D, magnesium, and folate have been associated with higher incidences or exacerbation of mental health issues. For instance, low magnesium levels combined with high calcium can provoke anxious states, while supplementation with certain herbs like Melissa Officinalis can mitigate these effects.

  • Diet Patterns: The Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, has been associated with better mental health outcomes. This diet is thought to influence inflammation and oxidative stress, which can interact with genetic predispositions to mental health conditions.

  • Antioxidants: Foods rich in antioxidants can help combat oxidative stress, which is implicated in various mental health disorders. Diets high in fruits and vegetables promote a healthy gut microbiome, which in turn influences brain health through the gut-brain axis.

  • Epigenetic Influence: Methyl donors in the diet (like folate, methionine, and choline) are crucial for DNA methylation processes that can affect gene expression related to mental health. Early life intake of these nutrients has been shown to impact cognitive and behavioural outcomes later in life.



While genetics provide a blueprint for mental health risks, it can be useful to target a specific nutritional support.

A genetic test is a great tool. Not to know if the condition is genetic (usually looking at the family history already gives great clues). What a good genetic test does is showing exactly at what stage our body needs support. It can be an enzyme that is defective in the production of a particular neurotransmitter, or a faulty neurotransmitter receptor. For these conditions there are usually some nutrients that can offer great and precise support.
